The use of Detergent Additives is frequently considered to avoid or delay Injector Nozzle Coking in Diesel IDI engines. To evaluate the effectiveness of these Detergent Additives, a new IDI engine screening test has been developed using a portable generator set. This procedure has proved to be a quick (6 hours), reliable and repeatable test with different Diesel fuels and Additives being evaluated. The effect of Detergent Additives composition and dosage level has been investigated with the test method allowing for Keep-Clean and Clean-Up properties to be demonstrated.Test results were comparable to those found with the european nozzle coking test being developed by the CEC PF26 group for IDI passenger car and with automobile testing.
