In automotive manufacturing, several steel and galvanized steel qualities are combined with light weight materials like aluminum, magnesium and various plastics. Joining operations of those materials are of increasing importance, e.g. regarding strength and stress levels or aging characteristics.Special pretreatment and adhesive combinations have been developed to bond aluminum substrates which cover a broad range of strength levels. Mechanical as well as climatic aging data demonstrate the excellent performance of the systems. Moreover, thin organic coatings for steel, galvanized steel and aluminum are introduced that give outstanding corrosion protection. They are an excellent basis for adhesive bonding as well, which is shown for several high strength epoxy adhesives.
