The concept of Program Management in today’s aerospace business is discussed in relation to the need for an effective management system to cope with a complex management task involving multiple interfaces of business and technical disciplines. Some organizational precepts are put forth as being fundamental to achieving an effective management system in a multi-program company environment of major aerospace programs. The Program Management system evolved by the Aircraft Division of Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc., for its DC-9 Jet Transport Program is described to illustrate the implementation of the concept.
