This paper deals with the design technique for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) for electrical compressor in electric vehicle (EV). First of all, to design the IPMSM which satisfies the torque-speed characteristics for electric compressor and to determine the motor size, the loading distribution method is utilized. After conducting the initial motor design, the finite element method (FEM) is applied to analyze the motor in detail. As a result, a method of designing IPMSM that offers high efficiency of 91% at 8,000 rpm and is suitable for the 200V vehicle has been established.
