The ever increasing use of elastomers in mechanical applications, along with the rapid progress in rubber technology, has compounded the problem of specifying these materials. The result has been that design engineers find themselves lost in a veritable rubber jungle with little hope of rescue. This paper describes the new Classification System for Elastomeric Materials (ASTM D 2000-SAE J200) and leads the engineer, with the use of this system, step by step on the safe path through that jungle.
