The methodology for the search for new materials for automotive pistons is presented. It led to the ascertain of the manufacturing feasibility of two materials with forecasted medium-term availability and competitive cost. Some manufacturing features as well as materials and pistons bench tests results are presented. This on going research determined that a rapidly solidified alloy has the best potential trade-off between piston cost and engine benefit.
