The status of a newly developed software system, fully-integrated computer-aided design, analysis, and physical testing is discussed. A system of four software codes have been integrated to create a single design tool for the development of automotive bumpers, from concept through FMVSS certification.A specific automotive bumper application has been chosen to demonstrate the development process. Software programs for design, dynamic impact analysis, and finite element structural analysis are examined. Both linear elastic and a newly-developed “fast” non-linear FBA solution is shown.A newly-established computerized dynamic test facility is featured showing data recovery, storage, and plotting including force, deceleration and displacement as well as film and video recording devices.
