The handling and movement of larger cargoes more rapidly is demanded by our present day economy. This requirement has resulted in more powerful towboats with more powerful powerplants. As a result, engine and ship designers have been confronted with greater towboat vibration problems. This paper enumerates the possible sources of these vibrations, and suggests ways and means of minimizing their harmful effects so that still larger towboats can be built for moving greater cargoes in the inland waterways.
