This paper highlights the generic idea of a synergetic system approach and first test results of a radar-based near distance sensing device actually developed at Siemens Automotive. Due to the limited space in the vehicle's front and rear region a multi-functional sensor system for different applications is envisaged.Technical requirements for near-term driver assistant functions are described and the necessary system architecture to handle those applications is roughly specified. Practical strength, limits and shortcomings of the realized systems and first test results are addressed.
