The technological development occurred in the last decades has been collaborating notoriously in the development of materials science area. In the automotive market, steel is the most important material and the most studied. The GMAW (GAS METAL ARC WELDING) welding process also stands out in the automotive industry, since it is a permanent union process of materials and has great versatility and economy. Different welding wire are found in the market, but the most common in the automotive industry is the solid wire. On the other hand, metal cored, known as “metal core” began to be also used by this industry, but with a much lower proportion due to lack of studies on it. Each of them presents its benefits, such as cost or productivity. Solid wires are more common in the automotive exhausts production. However, metal coreds are still not widely used on this industry, because their costs are higher than solid wire. However, several companies are looking for cost reduction through superior metal cored productivity versus solid wire. This study has the purpose of contributing with further clarification regarding the use of metal coreds AISI 439Ti, in automotive exhausts welding, composed of AISI 1018 carbon steel and stainless steel AISI 409 and AISI 439 instead of solid welding wire AISI 307Si. To analyze the test specimens produced during this study, the following tests were used: metallographic analysis, fatigue, thermal fatigue, dye penetrant and sensitization according to ASTM A763. The results demonstrated the greater efficiency of the metal cored compared to the solid wire. In all the tests, the metal cored presented a better behavior, justifying its use as an alternative as addition metal.
