The ECM cycle uses two basic tools—a free flow tool for trepanning work and an edge flow tool for producing cavities. In the ECM cycle the tool is cathodic and feeds into the work which is the anode, generally using salt water as the electrolyte. The cavity or hole produced exactly reproduces the tool shape within close tolerances. For work on exotic or hard metals, or where stress free machining is desired, the ECM cycle is most suitable. Several case histories are presented in the paper, together with comparative cost figures for ECM and conventional machining.
