Today's compilers for the CRAY and CYBER 205 perform some degree of “automatic vectorization.” While this ability by the compiler allows users to immediately begin using the vector processing capabilities of these machines, the user should be cautious of what the compiler is really doing. The most effective approach is to have a user/compiler interface which allows the user to direct the compiler through difficult decisions in its vectorization of programs, the “automatic” in the phrase “automatic vectorization” needs to be replaced with “interactive” in order to get the most out of the target machine.
