The U. S. Army Engineer and Development Laboratories is investigating several systems to develop fuel cell power-plants for Army application which utilize hydrogen derived from liquid hydrocarbons and oxygen from ambient air. In particular, four approaches are under consideration: direct oxidation, internal reforming, external reforming, and partial oxidation-molten carbonate. The advantages and major problem areas associated with each are described, as well as current progress covering the utilization of other fuels such as hydrazine and ammonia in the fuel cell system.
