In this study, bus dwell time is defined as the duration consumed by passengers alighting and boarding at a key stop. Some other activities may be involved in this duration of time such as lift operation. Bus dwell time is of great importance in estimating the capacity of a bus station, and it is also a major component of bus travel time. Also, functions of dwell time play an important role in service planning and reliability analysis of the transit route. This paper presents a comprehensive descriptive analysis and regression model on factors affecting dwell time such as passenger activity, lift operation, and crowding, etc. To develop the dwell time model, an initial model of dwell time due to passenger activity is first reviewed. Using the estimate of dwell time due to passenger activity, the unexplained dwell time is examined for holding operation strategies in time-points and operator relief impacts, where relevant.
