This past weekend, I had the privilege to address student leaders from across the US and Canada at the Midwestern/Great Lakes District ITE Student Leadership Summit at Purdue University. I was struck by how different the world and transportation profession are for these students as compared to how it was when I was in my transportation studies at the University of Wisconsin. The unknowns are forcing changes in our planning and design processes. We must adapt how we think about uncertainty so that we are not paralyzed by it. First is separating hype from reality. One place to start is realizing that disruption is not new.
