The author is deeply honored to receive the Theodore M. Matson Award. Matson was a leader and visionary, making lasting contributions in the field of transportation. Previous Matson Award winners have talked about the challenges facing their industry and the importance of preparing for change. Never has this seemed more important than today as they stand on the threshold of connected and automated vehicles; increasing use of mobility on demand, crowd sourcing and big data analytics; the demand for safe, active modes of transportation; and even Hyperloop technology. How people and goods move is foundational to their society. Social, economic, and technological change is constant and increasingly rapid. The transportation field is not immune to this change; in fact, it is an important facilitator of, and contributor to, this change. They cannot afford to allow business as usual to define the transportation profession. Strategic planning is crucial to understanding what the vision and priorities are for the future of our profession.
