Many North American cities began thinking seriously about sustainable transportation options in the 1990s or early 2000s. During this period, cities developed ambitious cycling network plans and began implementing their first cycling facilities. The most common examples of these early facilities are conventional bike lanes implemented on wider streets where they could be accommodated without sacrificing on-street parking or motor vehicle travel lanes. This approach was pragmatic and resulted in some successes: cities were able to start implementing cycling networks while avoiding both the high cost of road reconstruction and the political pushback associated with the removal of parking or motor vehicle capacity. Given the associated impacts to other demands in the right of way, implementing next generation cycling facilities is often a controversial and demanding process. It requires cultivating broad support, engaging a wide range of stakeholders, developing innovative designs, collecting lots of data, and embracing flexibility. Planning, designing, and implementing next generation cycling facilities requires extensive engagement and rigorous analysis.
