Crowdsourced data are any data that are obtained directly from those using the facility who are willingly, and often actively, engaged in using applications and/or connected equipment that contribute back data for the greater good. Crowdsourced transportation data can come from cell phones with navigation apps, connected vehicles, and more. Speed and travel time data have been well studied, vetted, and fully integrated into many freeway transportation systems management and operations programs around the world. Third party origin-destination, incident, and connected vehicle data are still new to most agencies, but these data are well positioned to dramatically change our industry. WAZE offers agencies access to their crowdsourced incident data in exchange for access to agency incident data, attribution, and co-marketing of the WAZE platform. It's an impressive, forward-thinking program that is exciting many operations and planners alike. Many agencies have an inherent distrust of crowdsourced incident data from WAZE.
