On Sunday, Aug 14, 2016, ITE hosted a TransportationCamp in Anaheim, CA, USA for the first time in conjunction with the ITE Annual Meeting & Exhibit, the day before the technical program was off and running. Begun in 2011, TransportationCamp is an unconference bringing together transportation professionals, technologists, and others interested in the intersection of urban transportation and technology. Instead of a set agenda defined ahead of time, unconferences have sessions suggested, and then led, by the attendees themselves. The event provides an opportunity for all attendees ("campers") to shape the event, leading to a great deal of involvement and enthusiasm from all participants. The "granddaddy" of TransportationCamps is held annually the day before the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, USA in January, drawing hundreds of attendees. ITE's first internationally hosted TransportationCamp was considered a success, and feedback from campers will be analyzed by ITE staff and volunteers to continue to grow this type of collaborative event in the future.
