As transportation engineers and planners, they have learned to recognize the importance of the public realm and how streets play a key part of how that realm serves community needs. It's not just about pavement anymore. In working with The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), they understand the social and economic dynamics that are impacted by how they design the public realm. Wide, high-speed freeways and arterials in urban settings divide communities and destroy the urban fabric. In comparison, slower moving traffic, in many cases operating under congested conditions, becomes business friendly, and provides opportunities for on street parking, bike lanes, and walkable sidewalks with pedestrian friendly intersections in a well-connected system of streets and transit.
