Queue spillover of left-turning vehicles into adjacent through lanes is a common cause of excessive intersection congestion. This paper mitigates the problem by dynamically allowing one opposing lane to be used as an additional left-turn pocket. By doing this, traffic operational performance can potentially be improved for all turning movements and even nearby intersections. This treatment does not require advanced technologies like connected vehicles. To avoid spatiotemporal conflicts of opposing vehicles, designs needed to be considered that include contraflow left-turn pocket length and optimum pre-signal green time. The contraflow left lane has been implemented in Handan, China. The goal of this article is to quantify operational benefits and evaluate methods for achieving efficient lane utilization.
