In an interview, Jacobs Engineering Group department manager Chad R. Hammerl talked about his career. Hammerl said he has always loved maps and navigating. His first job was with the Village of Schaumburg, IL, USA. Small municipalities offer a lot of opportunities to take leadership roles and make public presentations. After two years he was seeking a larger challenge, so he joined Jacobs. Advances in communication systems are having a drastic impact on his work developing ITS solutions. The ability to share more data at higher speeds is allowing transportation engineers to better manage existing infrastructure and to connect assets. Connecting traffic signals in an urban area used to mean trenching parkways and cross streets to install communications cables.
