A speech addressed by Kirk T. Steudle, director of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) since 2006, is presented. Steudle is truly honored and humbled to have been selected to receive this year's Theodore M. Matson Award. To be considered in the company of Matson, and the many accomplished previous winners of this award, is certainly very high praise. As director of the MDOT, he is proud to lead a government agency that continuously seeks new ways to operate more efficiently and to optimize transportation infrastructure investment. Steudle is truly fortunate to be surrounded and supported by so many innovative thinkers and outstanding performers, not just in his own agency, but throughout the nation's transportation industry. Matson left an impressive legacy in the transportation field, and his efforts as an engineer and educator impacted many people throughout the industry. Steudle thinks Matson would be very pleased to see today's efforts to leverage technology to help bring about a safer and smarter transportation future.
