John Edward Baerwald passed away on April 27, 2015 at the age of 89. As a Second Lieutenant in the US Army serving during World War II, John was honorably discharged in 1946 and went on to pursue his education and career in transportation. He received bachelor and master science degrees in civil engineering as well as a doctorate of philosophy from Purdue University. John served ITE and the transportation profession as a leader, researcher, academician, author, mentor, and traffic engineering consultant during a career spanning more than 50 years. In 1953, he received the Institute of Traffic Engineering's Past Presidents' Award for Merit in Transportation.
