There is a new approach to collaboration in motion in the field of active transportation planning: one that harnesses many of the quickly evolving technologies changing how planners collect information and communicate. It's called "crowdsourcing," which can be described as the process of obtaining information, insight, and knowledge from user-generated data provided through Web and mobile applications. Finding or collecting data about cyclists, pedestrians, and active transportation infrastructure can be a challenging task. These types of data are often limited, difficult to access, or not well suited for use in spatial analysis and other planning applications. Thus, effective crowdsourcing data collection and aggregation efforts can help address these issues, with the potential to provide perspectives from a variety of demographic and geographic regions on topics such as physical infrastructure, personal travel experiences, and community priorities. And when used carefully and creatively, crowdsourcing tools have great potential to inform and add value to active transportation planning projects.
