In an interview, David J. Thatcher, senior associate with Stantec Consulting in Calgary, Alberta, talked about his career. Thatcher said it's been a winding path, but it's a journey that wouldn't trade for anything. He came out of school and went to work for Volimer Associates, determined to be a structural engineer (that didn't last long). The twists and turns of his career led him to work on road design, land development, environmental services, and marketing before he finally landed in traffic engineering. There are probably more similarities than differences when it comes to the actual operations of the firms themselves. However, some of the big changes in moving from the much more established northeastern US to a rapidly growing western Canada have been the size, speed, and volume of the projects.
