While researching perceived barriers to walking in California as a graduate student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, the author frequently saw that "being too far to walk" was respondents' biggest perceived barrier. This realization gave him the idea to try an experiment of hanging 27 simple way-finding signs around downtown Raleigh, NC aimed at three demographics. Through a Kickstarter fundraising effort and his friend's help, he developed an open-sourced online resource for anyone to create their own wayfinding signs to print and install. More than 100 communities have used the Kickstarted open-source sign template to create their own street sign campaigns, bringing life to Walk (Your City). Meanwhile, regarding the connection between Walk (Your City) and health, BlueCross BlueShield is interested in Walk (Your City) campaigns as a means to improve public health through active transportation. For him, Walk (Your City) is an exciting venture that provides real change in the built environment in a short amount of time.
