This article focuses on the engineering perspective on how engineers can design, review, and implement interim design and tactical urbanism projects. It presents an overview of engineering considerations, followed by three case studies where perceived barriers were successfully negotiated to provide a positive impact on communities. The first case study focuses on Interim Design as an example of how to maximize complete streets improvements when a project is limited in budget and scope. The second focuses on a 48-hour Tactical Urbanism installation, which created a four-block long, three-dimensional model of proposed improvements. The third focuses on a day-long temporary installation of a one-way cycletrack. Interim Design in this article is understood to include projects that use low-cost temporary materials and may be installed for several months or several years. Tactical Urbanism is understood to mean very temporary projects that last for no more than a few days, only use temporary materials, and typically can be set up by volunteers rather than contractors.
