In an interview, Sakib Khan of the Clemson University in South Carolina, talked about his technology idea and his experiences preparing for a career in transportation. Khan said that he wanted to draw attention toward pedestrian safety issue while participating in the Mobility Idea Contest. His motivation was to come up with the ultimate solution for safe pedestrian crossings for all -- including elderly people, school children, and people with disabilities-that will be effective 24/7 regardless of weather conditions. With the recent advancement of connected vehicle technology, he envisions pedestrians will keep communication with vehicle drivers through smart phone or smart-watch applications, or even with connected wrist bands. This will warn the moving vehicle drivers approaching a crosswalk. He plans to join academia as a faculty member. From his previous professional experience he has found that a career teaching suits him well. His passion is to engage himself in the exciting, cutting-edge research work on connected vehicles.
