Here, Maser says facing limited and uncertain government funding, the US space industry has been experiencing a proliferation of commercial actors. The opportunities and challenges in the ongoing trends in the commercial aviation, defense, and space segments demonstrate the need for all members to examine their own American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA) organization to move successfully with the industry. They are already taking action by evaluating the structure of our governance, which will allow them to be not only more flexible, but also relevant to the aerospace community writ large. To evaluate what it means to be "relevant" today, AIAA's Institute Development Committee is establishing a dedicated "Study Group" to determine who our customers are--and should be--and what it means to be relevant, and valuable, to those different customers and market segments. To be flexible is to be successful in this industry. They will regularly take the pulse of members and nonmembers alike to drive these changes.
