For more than a year, Joe Horn has enlisted naval test pilots to find a potential solution to one of the hairiest tasks in flying--setting down a helicopter on the deck of a ship in rough waters. Specifically, Horn, an associate professor of aerospace engineering at Penn State, wants to pinpoint the optimal level of computer assistance for these landings. Today, only the most highly trained and skilled military pilots are allowed to perform these maneuvers, because they are done purely by hand. If Horn's Navy-funded research succeeds, the Navy will, have a better handle on the best type of computer-aided pilot controls to build into future helicopters. This could make landings at sea safer, smoother, less nerve-racking and possible for a wider range of pilots. Here, Button speaks to Pennsylvania State University researchers who are testing how best to split that potentially hazardous responsibility to land a rotorcraft on a ship in rough seas between pilot and computer.
