An obituary for former AIAA Solid Rocket Technical Committee chairman Richard H. Sforzini, who died on Jan 8, 2015, is presented. As director of Engineering for Thiokol Chemical Corp's Space Booster Division, Sforzini led the engineering effort that culminated in 1965 in successful test firing of the world's first three-million-pound thrust solid-propellant rocket motor. At Auburn University, he taught jet propulsion and aerodynamics and worked on a number of NASA-sponsored research projects related to the space shuttle.
