The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Science Mission Directorate is committed to developing science missions based on small-format spacecraft, including CubeSats and those that can be launched from a standard evolved expendable launch vehicle (EELV) secondary payload adapter (ESPA) ring. NASA's Planetary Science Division funded nineteen concept studies to determine if deep space SmallSat missions could credibly conduct high quality science, and then used the results of those studies to solicit Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration (SIMPLEx). This paper describes the SIMPLEx program, including rules for international participation, and the results from the concept studies.
