Consideration is given to the existing Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (BISDN), a delivery method as defined by the International Consultative Committee for Telephone and Telegraph, satellites' role in providing these services, and the NASA high data rate ACTS experiments. It is concluded that satellites have the capability to extend BISDN services beyond the range of the terrestrial BISDN and will provide certain BISDN services more cost effectively in a direct competitive or hybrid satellite-fiber implementation.
