A review is presented of the major challenges for aerodynamic measurement created by advanced aircraft systems that range from turbulence modeling to scramjet engines. Three diverse examples typically challenge current capabilities: modeling of compressible turbulence, validation of complex 3D flow predictions, and thermochemical characterization of chemically active high-enthalpy flows. Various techniques being explored and under development to realize the aerodynamic measurements required are discussed.
