Matrix/fiber structural components strengthened by prestressing, according to proposal, increasing effective tensile strengths of components and enabling components to function in applications in which they otherwise fail. Reinforcing fibers stretched while encapsulated in matrix. After encapsulation, fibers released, placing matrix in lengthwise compression. Variety of fiber/matrix combinations fabricated this way. Prestressed quartz fibers encapsulated in ceramic matrix. Resulting composite used to make blade for gas turbine. Ceramic, normally weak in tension, has high strength and endures high temperature.
