The configuration of the Space Shuttle System Automatic Landing Capability (autoland) is presented, and the operational issues in the development of the autoland system are discussed. Special attention is given to the autoland system capability, the system requirements, the guidance trajectory, and the energy control elements. The issues surfaced in the Orbital Flight Test program and the changes made in the autoland system during the 1985 to 1989 period are examined.
