Report discusses performance of recently developed method of estimating mesoscale near-surface winds over ocean from normalized cross sections of radar backscatter from surface of ocean. Based on geophysical model that, in turn, based on geostrophic approximation and upon simplistic assumptions about divergence and vorticity of wind field, but also includes nongeostrophic winds. Compared with older method. Newer method yields more-accurate estimates of wind field, fewer gaps, and wider swaths.
