This paper describes the Laser Atmospheric Sounder and Altimetry (LASA) and the Lidar In-Space Technology Experiment (LITE) projects, both of which will use solid-state lasers for remote sensing. LASA will provide long-term global measurements of aerosols and clouds in the earth's atmosphere. The LITE project is designed to demonstrate the first use of a lidar system in space, proving the technology required for future space-based lidar facilities such as LASA. A Shuttle flight experiment is currently being developed to enhance the technology and to formulate the design of the solid-state lidar system. Design diagrams of LITE and LASA facilities and their subsystems are presented.
