The history of the Space Shuttle upper stages is reviewed, giving some of the characteristics of the stages themselves. The Shuttle/Centaur, a high-energy cryogenic upper stage being developed for the Galileo and International Solar Power missions, is emphasized. Its basic configuration, mission characteristics, and physical relation to the Shuttle are described.
