Spacecraft destined for interplanetary flight can be assembled, fueled, and tested near the Space Station, thus providing for spacecraft too large and/or massive for launch from earth on a single boost. The 28.5-deg-inclination orbit of the Station will, however, cause penalties for some missions. Another Station role is to recover sample returns from, e.g., Mars or a comet.
