The possible significance of data on the environment of Mars obtained by the Viking Mars lander is discussed. Such data may provide the basis for a comparative study of the chemical evolution of the earth and Mars. The implications of the presence or absence of evidence of life on Mars for the probability of life in similar solar systems are considered.
