The laser seems to have excellent possibilities for a use in space communication systems. However, there exist major difficulties which have to be overcome before these possibilities can be implemented. Of the various types of lasers the carbon dioxide and the Nd:YAG laser appear attractive because of a combination of favorable properties. Systems based upon these two lasers are discussed.
