The merits of the RPRV (remotely piloted research vehicle) concept are discussed, along with its historical background and development culmination in the 3/8-scale F-15. The use of RPRVs is shown to be especially attractive when testing must be done at low cost, or in quick response to demand, or when hazardous testing must assure the safety of proceeding to manned vehicles.
