The report describes current methods and trends of ticketing observed in the major modes of travel; bus, rail, ship and air, with emphasis on air travel. It was found that systems in use are tailored to meet the needs of the carrier concerned; however, within each mode, adopted procedures are similar. Provisions for intermodal processing of ticketing documentation are virtually non-existent. The airlines, reacting to rapid growth in the last decade, lead other modes in effective application of present technology, particularly in the area of automated reservations systems. Despite installation of newer equipment, the most apparent need for improved systems is found at air terminals. Intercity bus carriers have no reservations systems and issue preprinted tickets or prepare tickets manually for transportation on their own lines and for connecting carriers. Rail and water carriers maintain reservations records and issue tickets, following in most cases the same manual procedures used in the early 1950's. (Author)
