Several studies have suggested the possibility of predicting operational performance in fleet aviation environments. This report concerns the use of an automated performance-based test battery, involving cognitive and psychomotor functioning, to predict the operational performance of fighter pilots. Two groups of pilots who were completing fleet replacement squadron (FRS) training for the F/A-18 were tested on this battery. The older and more experienced pilot group got higher FRS grades than did the other group; test performance between these two groups was not significantly different. Those few significant correlations found between the test measures and the FRS grades were illogically patterned and of insufficient quantity or strength to demonstrate any reliable predictive ability. This could have been due to the homogeneous nature of each of these subject groups in terms of piloting skills and abilities.
