The report describes a laboratory model of a simple manually controlled, tractor type, personnel propulsion unit for use under zero gravity conditions. The device consists of a pair of hand-mounted thrust nozzles with fore and aft thrust vector control. A backpack containing two, high pressure, gas bottles supplies dry nitrogen to the thrusters. A series of tests were conducted to obtain thrust nozzle calibration, valve/nozzle modulation, and verification of the total system to deliver the required thrust. The tests verified that the thrust nozzles were within tolerance. The valve/nozzle combination demonstrated total system performance within specification requirements and with satisfactory modulation characteristics. Further research should include evaluation of the propulsion system in a zero gravity environment. (Author)
