Criteria for fastener system design are suggested. The application of system analysis to mated parts held together with a high-strength fastener is discussed. The torque-tension relationship of each system should be measured, and fracture mechanics should be used to index environmental compatibility. This approach can also be used to produce a cost-effective fastener system design. (Author)
