A major requirement of experimental missile firings is that the position and attitude of the missile be known during flight. At Woomera extensive use was made of optical tracking systems which were more accurate than contemporary radar sets, provided the missile remained in view. The design and manufacture of a series of tracking flares developed to extend the range of visibility are described.
