The air rescue mission occupies a significant place in the history of the U.S. Air Force. During wartime and peace, Air Force rescue units have saved the lives of tens of thousands of servicemen and civilians of all nationalities. This historical perspective examines the influence military doctrine has had on the development of air rescue operations since the advent of the air power. It also considers how American humanitarian values have motivated the commitment of military resources for the single purpose of saving life.
